All assets, including money, houses, cars, personal injury settlements, etc. are included when determining SSI benefits. So if the amount received is over the SSI limits of $2000 for liquid assets, then the SSI benefits will be affected/stopped. The settlement funds could be placed in a special needs trust, if applicable, and then the benefits will not be affected. Because SSDI benefits are not “need based” like SSI, the SSDI benefits will not be affected.
Will my personal injury settlement affect my Social Security Disability Benefits or Social Security Income benefits?
