University of Pennsylvania graduate students Elizabeth Beattie, Nick Parrotta, Nick McGill and Niko Vladimirov joined together to create an important product for their graduate thesis. The goal was simple: To develop a compact, wearable device that can help prevent workplace injury. The result is the Titan Arm, a device that an individual wears “like a backpack,” attaching to the individual and “adds strength allowing them to lift things that they wouldn’t be able to otherwise,” Parrotta said.
The motor system of the Titan Arm uses a pulley and a metal plate used for scuba diving tanks. The Titan Arm allows for a redistribution of weight from a person’s arm to a stronger pulley system capable of holding items in place as well as moving them with a remote control. The group of students feels that the Titan Arm will allow an individual to lift approximately 40 more pounds than they normally would be able to lift.
Parrotta states that the aim of the Titan Arm was to help reduce workplace injuries for individuals like warehouse workers and delivery drivers who repeatedly need to lift heavy items throughout the day. A strain, sprain or tear can leave an individual out of work for weeks, costing both the injured individual and companies. It is the aim of the students to help reduce these injuries with a simple device.
